Response One

In the first chapter of the novel, Coop asks Pat to transcribe the recordings into Pat's journal, and then refers to the word epistolary.  Do a little research!  Find out what epistolary (or an epistolary novel) means and make a connection to this book.  Hint: You might want to read the first three chapters before responding to this post.

The word epistolary means that something is contained in or is carried on by letters. The connection that I have made between this word epistolary and the book is that the book is about Coop and Pat talking to each other through the digital voice recorder. Coop wants Pat to transcribe all of these digital letter into his journal that he is always scribbling in. This recorder allows them to communicate by recording what they said and sending to the other recorder, this lets the person with that other recorder to listen and respond. Also, the letters are contained in the memory sticks that are place in the recorder to play them. The book is carried on by letters that have been sent between the two brothers.

The word epistolary means that you relate or indicate the writing of letters or literary works in the form of letters. The connection that I made between the book and the word epistolary was that Coop was making and sending recordings to Pat and Pat was transcribing them into his journal.

The word epistolary means in the form of letters. Based off of what Wikipedia said, I gathered that an epistolary novel is a novel written as a series of letters, diary entries, and articles. In many cases, and epistolary novel is made to seem more realistic, as it mimics real life. It also can help transition from one point of view to another. Epistolary novels are typically a bit scattered and miscellaneous, but in the end all tie together to form a plot. An example of an epistolary novel is Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is composed of many different comics and diary entries. I believe that Beneath is an epistolary novel because of how scattered it all seems. It is made up of Pat's diary entries along with the recordings sent to and from Pat and Coop. I think that Coop was asking Pat to use his diary as a sort of epistolary novel.

The word epistolary means in the form of letters and in literary it means relating to the writing of letters. Epistolary can be used in novels, which would make that novel a epistolary novel. A epistolary novel is a novel written in the form of a series of letters. This can also include diary entries, newspaper articles, ship's logs, and telegrams as well. The Latin word epistola means letter which was used to make the word epistolary. Some epistolary novels that the book Beneath mentioned are Dracula and A Journey to the Center of the Earth. Both use different points of views such as Dracula. In the novel Dracula it uses newspaper clippings to tell the reader events that the main characters didn't see or hear for themselves, allowing the reader to get a different point of view on the story. I believe, that the novel Beneath is an epistolary novel because, it uses different points of views in the story to allow the reader to understand. Not that the novel was switching points of views put the voice recorder and the diary entries are qualities that apply for epistolary novels which leads me to believe that Beneath is a epistolary novel.

  5. I can infer that epistolary means something that can relate to writing because before he was talking about how he wanted Pat to write back to Coop and record back to him. It means related to the writing of letters. I think the genre of book is related to is a course of documents

  7. Epistolary means letter, an epistolary novel is a written novel as a series of documents. Most of the time the form of is a letter, or in diary entries. In this day the most common form is blogs, emails, or recordings on the radio. In the book Beneath the main character named Pat O'Toole had his brother, Coop run away. Now, exactly one year to the day after Coop left Coop sends a package to the school, not his house. The package has a handheld digital voice recorder, some memory sticks, and a note. Now the two brothers can talk to each other. This book is like an epistolary novel because the book is written in like diary entries based on what Coop has to say on the memory sticks, the book it almost like Pat's journal.

Epistolary comes from the Latin term epistola, meaning letter. Epistolary is a collection or series of letters, notes, or novels. In modern times, epistolarys are usually found in text messages, recordings on radio stations, or on social media. In the book Beneath, there is a main character named Coop. Coop is a unique boy who loves to read and keep journals. His favorite book is Dracula, which is written in epistolary technique. Coop uses the technique to communicate with his younger brother, Pat.

An epistolary novel uses journal entries and combines them together to make the novel. In the book, it said that “ Coop wanted Pat to transcribe the recordings into one of Pat’s journals that he scribbles in”. I think Coop wants Pat to write an epistolary novel using information on the memory sticks. Pat and Coop are going to send recordings to each other using the memory sticks to keep in touch. Pat will write only Coop’s recordings into the journal to make the epistolary novel. Once they are ready to send the memory sticks, they have to send them to a secret PO box so their mom and dad won’t find out that Coop and Pat are communicating.

the word epistolary means: the writing of letters. An epistolary novel is a novel written as a series of documents. Letters are the most common form of an epistolary; although, Diary entries, Newspaper clippings, etc. can be used. The word epistolary is derived from Latin but is also from the Greek word epistole (meaning letter). I have a connection to this because I am writing letters to one of my friends who lives in Sagle, Idaho.

  11. The definition of the word "epistolary" means "relating close to the form of letters." In the book Pat says "The technique is called epistolary, from the Latin epistola, meaning letter." I can see this because epistola means "a letter, a written imperial decree." That's actually pretty close to the definition. I can connect to this because I used to do an online pen pal thing but then it was shut down because they couldn't afford it anymore.

In the book Beneath, Coop sends Pat a package that contained a handheld digital voice recorder, a supply of memory stick and a note written on a greasy hamburger wrapper. The voice recorder had a message from Coop in it, and a part in it said, "You'll be able to transcribe all this into one of those journals you're always scribbling in. Epistolary. Remember that?". According to google, a epistolary is, "(of a literary work) in the form of letters." and "relating to the writing of letters.". I think that Pat was intended to write the conversations down in his journal as a letter and use information in the memory stick to hold on to what one them said through the recorder. This book seems like a collection of memories from different times so I think that it's like a epistolary novel. A epistolary novel is like a diary, "a series of letters.", according to dictionary.com.

The word epistolary meaning letter is a technique of writing that makes you think that the story or character is real, thus frightening the reader. Epistolary is usually used in horror books such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Werewolf. People still use the technique epistolary now in modern horror books/novels. The technique epistolary can't only be used in books, it can also be used in movies. For example, when I was about nine I watched my first scary movie. The movie was called The Fog, it was about a fog that killed people. It scared me so much that I still don't like fog, and I hate walking down my long dark hallway to get to my room. This year I watched the movie again to get over my fear and see how scary it was. I watched the whole movie and then realized that it wasn't scary at all in fact it was so cheesy I could taste it. In conclusion people have been using the technique epistolary for hundreds of years and people still use it to this day

An epistolary, or epistolary novel, According to Wikipedia, is a story or novel constructed of diary entries, newspaper clippings, emails, letters, blogs, raido news, or, like in "Beneath," recordings. The word "episotlary" comes from the latin and greek word, epistol, which means or refers to the word, "letter." Some famous examples of epistolary novels are: the diary of Anne Frank, published by Otto Frank, The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. The book "Beneath" is made up of short diary entries, recordings sent by Coop and Patrick, and also short conversations along with pieces of the story. Before the story takes off, at the beginning of the book, on page 12, Coop says, "this is what I'm doing here in this journal . . . stringing bits and pieces of information to make a story," refering to epistolary novels. So based on what I have reaserched and read, I know that Coop, the main character of the story, is telling he and his brother's story to the audience through an epistolary novel.

The word epistolary means to write something in the form of a letter. When Pat transcribe the recording he is writing as a epistolary novel. Just like when you are writing in a journal. What you are writing into a journal is in letter form to someone or it is a epistolary novel. For example, in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Greg, is writing in a journal in letter form to someone. Pat is writing a epistolary novel because he is writing the recording in the form of a letter to someone.

  19. Epistolary written therefor an epistolary novel is a written novel meaning it is a novel compiled from any things. It could be compiled from newspaper articles , letters, telegraphs, emails, recorded memory's , memoirs, or other written documents. However in this book the epistolary novel is compiled of spoken recordings sent on memory sticks played on a voice recorder. Pat and Coop both have recorders so they can speak long distances secretly. Coop/ Pats older brother sent him the recorder and memory sticks with hopes he would write down all of the entrys that Coop sends him in a journal. This would eventually create a epistolary novel. Some famous epistolary novels are Anne Franks Diary, Daddy Long Legs and The Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series.

  20. The word epistolary means in letter form or written. This means it would be in the type of a diary, letter, or journal. Coop and Pat have a recorder to talk. They use this instead of anything else to speak to one another. Its just as if you were to talk using some type of journal or paper, instead they use recorders. Pat says "this is what i'm doing here in this journal...stringing together bits and pieces of information to make a story" he is explaining the epistolary novels. An example of an epistolary novel is "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. This means there is some kind of letter form to make this book and epistolary novel.

The definition epistolary is a form of a letter. This relates to the book because Coop and Pat keep sending memory sticks back and forth to talk to each other. Coop sent a recorder and memory sticks to Pat, saying that he has one too. They can record themselves on the sticks then send the sticks to each other, instead of writing a letter. At location 275 Pat says that it went on like that for months back and forth. The book is Pats journal and he is translating all of the recordings into his journal. Coops favorite book is "Dracula" by Bram Stoker which an epistolary novel as well.

I believe that the word epistolary means to continuously write or transcribe letters. A connection to the book is that Pat transcribes the digital letter into his note book. Coop told pat that he has to write down all the digital letters to keep track of them. I think that the main character of the book is Pat. I believe this because Pat is the one receiving the digital letters. To further explain my belief, Pat is the character the story is following.

  25. So, you want know what epistolary means and how it relates to the story? Let me put it this way. Epistolary is an adjective that has to do with the writing of letters. Its meaning is roughly the same in Latin and French. That being said, when Coop sent the recorder and memory sticks to Pat, he stated that they could record their messages and send the memory sticks to each other. Some journals start with dear so and so, which sounds an awful lot like letters. Wait isn’t that what epistolary means as well, therefore it makes sense to mention epistolary in the first few chapters of the book.

The word epistolary means association with letters or the writing of letters. The usual form of epistolary is letters, but newspapers and diary entries are sometimes used. The word epistolary originally comes for a Greek word, epistle, meaning a letter. For most of the book, the only way Pat and Coop communicated was through a voice recorder, which recently became a popular form of epistolary. A connection I can make is while we watch videos in class, we write down the important facts and use them later. Famous epistolary novels include Dracula by Bram Stoker, The Screwtape Letters bye C. S. Lewis, and Carrie by Stephen King.

In my research I learned that an epistolary novel is usually written as a serious of documents, done so in a form of letters, but sometimes diary entries, newspaper clippings and other documents are used. Electronic "documents" such as recordings and radio, blogs, and e-mails have recently come into use. Coop is sending recordings about his life to Pat and said he was sorry he left without telling Pat. Coop also told Pat he could transcribe all of the recordings into his journal. This is an example of an epistolary novel because it's using recordings, transcribing and journal writings along with the daily happenings in their lives. Another example of an epistolary novel is The Diary of Anne Frank where Anne's diary is used to share her feelings of life during WWII which also told of historical events happening at the time.

An epistolary is writing in letters or literacy words in the form of a letter. An epistolary novel is similar to what epistolary means. Writers use letters, journals, and diary entries to deliver messages through a series of letters. In Beneath, Coop read the epistolary novels to Pat because they were his favorite books to read. When Coop read these books to Pat he would get nightmares. It had such an effect on him because Stoker wrote it in such a realistic way as if it was real.

The world epistolary means a type of writing composed of smaller entries to make a story. The author will use different types of newspaper articles, letters, recordings and other things to tell the story. The connection that I have so far is that the story is made up of epistolary itself, and not chapters. It also has some voice recordings as well as references to newspaper headlines. Most of the tape recorder conversations so far are 2 way conversations, using the same recorder and sending messages back and fourth. Coop wants Pat to transribe the messages in his journal, forming an epistolary novel.

  43. Based on my research I learned that the word epistolary means, to be in the form of a letter. Writers use this type of writing to show how characters deliver and receive messages from each other. A few ways the epistolary style is shown are through letters, recorded messages, and documents. For example, the book Beneath is made up of short recordings that have been jot down into a journal. The author shows that this is an epistolary novel because the main character Pat has short conversations with his brother Coop through recorded messages, which Pat then transcribes into his journal as asked by his brother. Us as the reader then read about what Pat wrote down into his journal, as well as important events in between their recorded messages. Epistolary reminds me of history, because we only know parts and bits of it that has been handed down by our ancestors for centuries. The parts and bits we know about have been placed on a timeline and taught to us in school as an incomplete story.
