Response Two

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a rabbit hole is defined as a "bizarre or difficult state or situation--usually used in the phrase down the rabbit hole."  The term originates from the rabbit hole that Alice enters in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

Chapter One is titled "Down the Rabbit Hole" and the last sentence in the chapter states, "Down the rabbit hole we go."
Answer the following:
1. Why do you think the author chose that title for Chapter One?
2. Why do you think Pat feels like he is heading "down a rabbit hole?"
3. Use evidence from the text to support your answers. (Hint: Make the connection with the definition above.)

I think that the author chose the name, down in the rabbit hole for chapter one because Pat was in a difficult situation after his brother Coop left him without saying a word. The situation that Pat was just in was mad. He was angry. because Coop left home with no good-bye’s or warning. Then for a year, Pat heard nothing from Coop still. I think that Pat still feels like he is going down a rabbit hole is because he is going to be contacting Coop with a recorder. In the text it states, “ Only Coop would think of something like this. That’s how his mind works. But the recorder was a huge technological leap for him. I think this is the first electronic gadget he has ever owned.... Down the rabbit hole we go.” This explains that Coop took a major step in his technological life. He has never owned something like that so Pat is in a difficult situation with the recorder and Coop.

I think that the author used the term "Down the Rabbit Hole" as a metaphor to predict what's going to happen in the story. According to Wikipedia, Down the rabbit hole is a metaphor for entry into the unknown. Maybe the chapter title was indicating that Pat was entering the unknown, or a daring situation. I think that Pat felt he was heading down a rabbit hole because he knew he could be entering a very sticky situation. I know this because in the text, it said, "But the recorder was a huge technological leap for him....A collaboration with my brother." I think he knows that Coop is trying something very new to him, which could have several outcomes, some of which are bad outcomes. I also know that Coop has gotten into trouble before, and Pat collaborating with Coop could end badly as well. I think Pat knows this, but he loves his brother, so he is willing to go down the rabbit hole, or take risks with his brother.

  3. I believe the author named the chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" because it might give us a clue. Pat was disappointed when Coop left and he was probably having mixed emotions about his parents spiting up. He was probably happy when Coop wrote him but disappointed that he left and he hasn't seen him in a while. According to the chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" it says, "Hey Meatloaf, I know you're mad at me for splitting without so much as a good-bye, or a note" This means that Pat didn't know that he left because he didn't say goodbye. Pat is thinking about Coop all the time. He really misses him and wants to see him again.

I think that the author chose the title "Down the rabbit hole" because Coop left pat without as much as a goodbye. Pat had mixed emotions about Coop leaving and his parents who are now divorced. (for example. Anger, misunderstanding, sorrowful, disappointment). According to the chapter "Down the rabbit hole." it says, "Hey Meatloaf, I know your mad at me for splitting without so much as a good-bye, or a note." This means that Pat had no idea that Coop left because he never said good-bye.
Pat longed to see Coop and he wishes to see him again.

I think that the author chose the title of the chapter “Down the Rabbit Hole” because Pat is in a difficult state because his brother Coop ran away. I believe Pat feels like he is heading down a “Rabbit Hole” because Coop ran away. Pat looked up to Coop and idolized him which is why he is in a difficult state. Pat shows this in the book when he says, “I would have rather written you a letter, but you said you wanted to hear my voice.” Coop was the person who wanted to hear Pat’s voice meaning they might have had a close bond which would create another example of why pat might be sad that Coop left. However, it is weird that Coop would want Pat to send him a voice message because the book says Coop does not like to use technology.

  7. The title of chapter one is titled "Dow The Rabbit Hole" because Pat is in a difficult state right now and also it is hinting at the tile of the book "Beneath". Coop lives under the city of New York City along with a community. I think that Pat feels like going "down a rabbit hole" because he hasn't been underground and kind of wanted to go in the sewers of New York City because he thinks that there is no way that he can afford a home therefore underground is where he is. There is no way anyway that he would be able to find a home or a family to live with in New York City because one, everything is way too expensive and two, most people in New York City are very rude.

  8. "Down the Rabbit Hole" means going into the unknown or entering a difficult situation. I think that the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" because Pat has just entered a fork in the road with his brother. One side leading to regular daily life with nothing changing. While the other path has challenges and chances to talk to his brother. Although Pat was no good with technology he accepted the voice recorder and the challenges that were sure to come because he loved his brother. In the book Beneath it states, "Only Coop would think of something like this. That's how his mind works. Bu the recorder was a huge technological leap for him. I think this is the first electronic gadget he has ever owned."

I think that the author chose the title, "Down the Rabbit Hole." "Down the Rabbit Hole is a metaphor for entering into the unknown. Pat is in a very difficult situation because his brother Coop had just ran away. It was even worse because Coop was Pat's role model. It says in the book," And I'm not embarrassed to say that I have Idolized Coop my entire life..." I think that it is even harder because Coop wanted to hear Pat’s voice. I can infer from this that Pat and Coop had some type of a bond.

1.The author chose that title because I think that Pat and Coop are going to a bizarre place. On the book’s cover, it shows a well and a ladder, so I think Pat will find something in the sewers.

2.Pat feels like he is in a rabbit hole because of all of the weird things that has been happening. For instance, normally a package would go to your house not your school. Normally you would call or text not use a voice recorder to talk to someone. Pat does not know what to expect next.

From my reading I know that the Arthur probably used the phrase "Down The Rabbit Hole" because his life is escalating very very fast. For example, ever since Coop left, Pat's life has been normal, going to school, having friends and being with his family. But once he got in contact with Coop, his whole life just changed. He had just talked to his brother for the first time in many, many years. Pat was probably confused on why Coop contacted him now, why he does not want to come home and what is he looking for. What do you think Coop is looking for? Another way you can look at the title "Down The Rabbit Hole" is, Pat is confused and doesn't know what to do. Should he tell his parents that he contacted Coop? Should he run away from home to join Coop on his journey to find out what he was looking for? Or should he just forget about Coop and live a normal calm life. What do you think about the situation? In conclusion Pat has lots of big decisions to make and lots of things to ask Coop, I love this book and can't wait to read more.

I think the author chose the title "Down The Rabbit Hole" because Pat is upset and confused that Coop left without saying goodbye.
Pat doesn't know why Coop left or where he went. Coop tryes to explain why he left with the digital voice recorder and memory sticks.
Pat feels like he is heading "down a rabbit hole" because he is unsure of what the future holds now that Coop has left and he has many questions.
Pat is also in a difficult situation because he isn't quit sure how to use the voice recorder. Pat thinks it's very bizarre that Coop is using a digital recorder because he normally likes to send letters.

I think the author called the first chapter, down the rabbit hole because of the situation Pat was in. After Coop left him he was sad without his brother. Then when he didn't hear from him for a year, it made the situation worst. Pat probably felt that he is going down a rabbit hole because he is now using recorders to talk to Coop. In the text it states, "Down the rabbit hole we go." It states that right after he just figured out the recorder. This shows that he is nerviest to use this device and he feels like he is going down a rabbit hole.

I think the title for chapter 1 "Down The Rabbit Hole" because Pat knows how different Coop is and how abnormal Coops communication is. He know he's about to start a very unique journey with his brother. The definition of rabbit hole is a bizarre situation. Pat uses it to describe the journey he's about to take. In the text, Pat notes that the recorder is the first electronic gadget that Coop has ever owned. In todays society, this proves how different Coop is.

1.The metaphor, “down the rabbit hole we go,” means to step into the unknown, or a disorienting, or mentally deranging physical /emotional experience. I think that the author chose this title for chapter one because the author was kind of was setting the tone for everything that would come to pass later on in the book, especially like going underground and to New York City .
2.For example, close to the beginning of the book,Coop and Patrick literally went down a tunnel that Coop was digging. Also, Pat completely steps into the unknown by tricking his parents on christmas to go to nyc to look for his brother, and for a bit of an adventure. He probably also feels emotionally like he’s going down a rabbit hole, because of all that’s been going on at home, his brother Coop, because his parents are both taking crazy different ways, and probably lack of attention too.
    3. In section 5 of the book, page 14 and 15, the story tells, “Coop was inside that muddy tube every single night, week after week, for eight months.” and , “On weekends I joined him in the tunnel. My job was hauling buckets of dirt and dumping them into the wheelbarrow.” This supports the tunnel part in question 2, that also supports question 1. And to support my the rest about New York City, on page 34 and 35 Pat says, “I began planning my expedition weeks ago . . . I wrote an email to Mom from Dad . . .” and “ I exchanged my ticket to Orlando for a ticket to New York City.” These two quotes kind of summarize how Pat tricked his parents and got a way to go to New York City to look for his brother.

  18. I believe that the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" for chapter one to hint at the reader what certain events happen in the chapter. The phrase "down the rabbit hole" is a bizarre of difficult state, more likely a situation. It has been used in many novels and is most know for Alice in Wonderland for when she falls down the rabbit hole. When she does fall she is in a bizarre situation. Such as Pat is with this recorder. This is the only contact he has with his brother. In the text it states, "Exactly one year to the day after my brother, Coop, ditched me, I got a package in the mail. It came to the school, not our house." Having a package sent to your school instead of your household is a bizarre situation to happen and Pat is already feeling nervous. These reasons lead me to conclude that the reason the author titled the first chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" is because he wants to hint at the moments to come in this short chapter of explanation.

  19. I believe the author named the first chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" due to the fact that Pat has just received notice that his brother is still out there and wants to talk. This is very bizarre for Pat and very confusing that Coop is just throwing himself into Pat's life. Coop threw himself into Pat's life by shipping that package to Pats school with the recorder stated on page 1.

  20. I think the author chose "down the rabbit hole" because of the rough situation that Pat was in at the time. The situation contributed to Coop being away. I would think Pat feels like he is heading down the rabbit hole because Coop is just now trying to become just a part of Pats life. Also, now they are talking to each other with those recorders to stay in touch. The "bizarre" or "weird" situation that might be referred to is that Coop instantly tries and just smoothly be a part of Pat's life and Pat is very confused on how Coop will successfully do that.

The Author chose the title "down the rabbit hole" for the first chapter because of the main character Pat's tough situation with his big brother Coop. Pat feels like he is going down the "rabbit hole" because Coop just sent him a strange package. It arrived at school. The "bizarre" or "weird" part is that Coop sent a recorder with a message in it. It said that he had one just like it and they can send memory sticks back and forth instead of writing letters to each other. This is weird because Coop is really bad with technology and tries to stay away from it. Why wouldn't Coop just write to Pat?

I think the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" for chapter one because everything was calming down then Coop decided to send the recording to Pat, creating a bizarre situation. I believe Pat felt like he was going "down a rabbit hole" because after such a long time after his brother ran away Coop just randomly decided to try and contact him. According to page one it was, "Exactly one year to the day after my brother, Coop, ditched me...". I think Pat was caught slightly off guard by his brother. Things in his life were escalating too quickly for him to understand.

  23. I think the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit hole" for chapter one because mostly about pat's brother leaving him or running away for a year to the exact day then coop tried to make contact with him after not talking to him for a long time after that pat was slightly shaken my this sodden moment from his brother. I think pat was trying to grab on to what was happening.

  24. I think that the author titled this chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" as a way of saying that we were going on, or starting an adventure. Like Alice when she went "down the rabbit hole" in the beginning of the story. I believe this because it is a kind of intro to the story and tells us that we are going "down the rabbit hole" that is the story. I think Pat feels like he is going down a rabbit hole that is the adventure of the story. Like I said previously. I think this has something to do with the story because it is a difficult position to be in. His brother, who has been gone for a long time, just up and contacted him and now he gets to do this cool thing with his brother after he has been gone for a long time.

  25. I think the author chose that title because Pat thinks he is in a difficult situation when his parents are divorced and Coop is missing. That makes some sense with name of the title. I think the reason Pat feels like he is going “down a rabbit hole,” is because he is feeling bizarre feelings at the time. For example, he has angry toward Coop for leaving. He is feeling torn by his parent’s divorce and is feeling unwanted because one parent does not want children and the other only wants girls. He is also confused when Coop contacts him and is bewildered by Coop’s message.

I believe that the author chose Down the Rabbit Hole as chapter one’s title, because Pat is going down a rabbit hole. To further explain my idea, it is bizarre for Pat because Coop left him without saying anything. He never spoke with Pat until a year later. I think that Pat believes he is going down a rabbit hole because everything is crazy and bizarre. Coop never spoke to Pat until a year after he ran away from home. According to the book Beneath, “Exactly one year to the day after my brother, Coop, ditched me, I got a package in the mail. It came to school not our house.” In other words, Exactly one year after Coop left, Pat got a package. Not only did he get a package, but it showed up at his school. He’s going down a rabbit hole because everything is crazy and bizarre. For example, Pat got a package from his brother Coop exactly one year after Coop left. So Pat is truly going down a Rabbit hole.

    1. The reason why he named the chapter "Down the Rabbit Hole" is because he feels like the recorder his brother gave him will turn into an endless spiral of sending it back and forth.
    2. Same as question 1, he feels like it will be and endless spiral of sending the recorder back and forth because they have no other way to speak.
    3. You can use dialog from the chapter to support this, such as when Coop says, "This is where you can send the memory sticks." like he is saying send it back to me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why do I think the author chose that title for Chapter One is because he felt like how that they were talking through the recorder was going to turn it back and forth.
Why do I think Pat feels like he is heading "down a rabbit hole?" Is because Pat and Coop have no other way to speak to each other besides through the recorder.
When Coop was sending his addresses to Pat. From my reading I know this because when Coop did not here from Pat for exactly one year. So, he went looking for him.

I think that the author chose "Down the Rabbit Hole" for the title of the chapter because in Alice in Wonderland, once Alice fell down the rabbit hole, crazy things started happening. Once Pat got the recorder and he and Coop started talking to each other, Pat had crazy things happen to him.
Pat feels like he is going to down a rabbit hole because a lot of insane things start happening, and the only way to talk to Coop is through a tape recorder.
The text states "Exactly one year to the day after my brother, Coop, ditched me, I got a package in the mail." This also means that Coop was trying to make contact with Pat, which to Pat was crazy.

In my opinion, I think that the author chose "down the rabbit hole" as the first chapter of the book because it is another way of saying that Pat is going into the unknown. Like in Alice in Wonderland when Alice goes down into the rabbit hole. I think that Pat feels like he is going down a rabbit hole because he hasn't heard from his brother in one year and now he is hearing from him now. In the book, it stated, "But the recorder was a huge technological leap for him." Or in other words, Coop didn't use many to not at all technology, meaning that if Coop was using the recorder this meant that whatever Coop was using the recorder for it was important. Thinking back to Alice in Wonderland Alice didn't know what she was up against but she went down the rabbit hole anyway, just like Pat is doing listening to the recorder.

In my opinion I believe that the author of beneath chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" for the books first chapter and last sentence for chapter one because it is a great choice of words describing what is about to happen and it makes the reader a little curious so you want to read and find out what it means. I think that Pat feels like he is heading down a rabbit hole because according to Merriam Webster's dictionary the definition of down the rabbit hole is "a bizarre or difficult state or situation" and when he gets the tapes at school he is probably thinking that it cant be good because they were sent to school and he was told not to show his parents but he is finally hearing from his brother so he will go along with it.

  33. The reason the author chose that specific title was because in Alice In Wonderland when she fell through the hole it became an adventure, And the choice of words make it even more intriguing to dive deeper in the book. The reason that Pat feels like he is heading down a rabbit hole because according to Merriam Webster's dictionary the definition of down the rabbit hole is "a bizarre or difficult state or situation" when he got the tapes at school he probably thought this isn't good because they were sent to the school. 34. I think the author chose the title, Down The Rabbit hole because when Alice went in the hole. She wonder around and tripped on a root and hit her head then past out. She woke up in a place she's never seen. Same thing happened with Pat but he was in the Hospital. I think Pat feel like his heading down a rabbit hole because when he woke up in the Hospital coop wasn't there same thing after he got back from school and he was gone. The relation to question 3, Pat's life was bizarre after coop left because his family split. Pat's mom got with a older man and his dad got with a younger woman. Then his brother stopped sending recording.

I think the author choose the title down the rabbit hole for chapter one because right in that moment Pat was like Alice from in Alice in Wonderland. Pat is going somewhere that he does not know. He is just like Alice who went to wonderland with no idea what she was doing. Pat feels as he is going down a rabbit hole because he is getting into something that he does not understand. The definition said a difficult situation. Pat does not know what to do. He is confused and has questions like, Why now? Why does he want to talk? Why did he leave?

In my theory the author was trying to state that pat was lost and confused, like a lost dog mountain lion hunting. His parents were divorcing and his brother had been missing for a year. He was lost and confused so the author named the title down the rabbit hole because he was lost and confused.

I think the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" because of a few things. First of all his brother just left randomly one day without a word, and then one day he got called to the front desk because they had a package for him that came from his brother. The package contained a recorder and a note from his brother which asked him to not share the recorder/message with their parents, but to send a recorded message back. All of these are bizarre situations which makes "Down the Rabbit Hole" a perfect title.
I think Pat feels like he is heading down a rabbit hole because the things that started happening are bizarre-his brother leaving and the mysterious package he receives, plus his brother's instructions to keep the recorder and his mote from their parents. These things aren't normal, and I think Pat doesn't know what to think.
I know from my reading that Coop doesn't use any electronics-he doesn't watch t.v., use phones, or play video games. On page 10 we also learn the Coop "has never worn a watch. He's never sent or received an email. He does not know how to drive a car." So Coop using the voice recorder is a huge step up in using technology for him since he never uses it. This is bizarre. This is the beginning of the rabbit hole.

I believe the author chose that title for chapter one because of the challenges along the way. To explain further, its kind of strange that Coop just expects Pat to be okay with him leaving and talking to him as if nothing even happened. Pat must have different feelings and thoughts about what to do. In the text it states, “… I got a package in the mail. It came to our school, not our house.” Based on this information, I can infer that this is a bizarre thing to have going on.

I think that Pat feels like he is heading ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ because he knows that all of Coop’s ideas are crazy. He probably feels like doing what Coop asks behind his parents back could cause lots of harm. It could cause his parents to feel like they cant trust him. I also think that Pat feels this way because this is not something that he would expect his brother to do. He probably thinks that this isn’t something that is normal for someone to communicate through. Thoughts are running through his mind, wondering if this is really what his brother is going to do to be able to talk to him.

Based on what I’ve read, I know that Pat is going “Down a Rabbit Hole” because of his brother. First of all, this is something that Pat did not expect to happen. Based on what I read, it states “ The secretary handed me the package with a warning that I was to never to use the school as my personal address. I was going to tell her that I hadn’t when I saw my name…” To explain further, he had no notice before that this package was going to arrive at the school. From my reading, I know that Pat felt like this was a bizarre thing to happen because he knew what his brother was like. The text states, “He does not know how to drive a car… He does not talk on the phone.(Ever)” This shows how hard it must be to accept what Coop was doing because he never did use or learn anything. From what I’ve read he hasn’t used a phone or even drove a car. Excepting what he was doing must have been hard for Pat.

    1. I think the author chose this title because just like Alice in Wonderland there are two very different worlds in this book. Pat is trying to find Coop and in order to do that, he will be going "down the rabbit hole".
    2. I think Pat feels like he's going down the rabbit hole because his has a lot of disfunction in his family life. He misses his brother, but has reconnected and learning about this bizarre underground world.
    3. The evidence in the texts has told us that there is a whole underground community. The bizarre activity of people like Mr. Trueman living two lives justfies Pat's actions. Now Pat is willing to go crazy and face his fears in order to seek out his brother. Even if it means lying to family.

I think the author chose this title because Pat has been facing many difficult things, knowing Coop had left him without saying goodbye or give a warning. It's really bizarre that Coop thought he could just leave and think Pat would be okay. Pat probably doesn't know what to do or what to think. If you think about it, Pat probably had many different feelings and thoughts when Coop sent the recorder. I think Pat feels like he his heading "Down the Rabbit Hole" because he is in a very difficult situation. Doing what Coop asks could mean that Pat might put himself in a little bit of danger. Coop never spoke to Pat until a year after he ran away from home. According to beneath, " Exactly one year to the day after my brother, Coop, ditched me I got a package in the mail. It came to our school, not our house." Not only was it a big technological jump for Coop, it came to his school. Everything is crazy which is probably why Pat feels like he is going "Down the Rabbit Hole."

I believe the author (Ronald Smith) used "down the rabbit hole" as a chapter heading because Pat is angry and confused now that Coop is gone. He (Ronald Smith) may have also used this metaphor because he wanted to foreshadow what was going to happen later in the book. Pat may think he is going down a rabbit hole because him talking to Coop may bring back painful memories and this could be emotionally difficult for Pat or anyone else that he shares the recording with. Going down the rabbit hole in this book could be choosing to lie to hid parents and go to New York to find Coop. This could be considered a rabbit hole because this will be difficult for Pat because he will be alone in a big city looking for someone who might not want to be found.

I think that the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole", for chapter one because Patrick is about to become involved in a bizarre adventure with his brother Cooper. Since Cooper contacted Patrick I’ve had a feeling that Patrick is going to do something he would never think of doing again. To further explain, Coop told Pat to not share the recordings or any information about him to there parents. Why wouldn't he be able to tell his parents that Coop is fine? It seems fishy to me it gives me an unsettling feeling about what's going to happen next. I think that Pat feels like he is heading down a rabbit hole because he thinks something important happened and his brother needs him. Why else would Coop be randomly contacting his brother after having no contact with his family for a year? In other words, I think that Coop has brought Pat into trouble by contacting him, and Pat has the same thought that he is going to be in a difficult or bizarre situation since Coop has contacted him.

I think the author chose the title "Down the Rabbit Hole" because he is about to go on a wild goose chase to find Coop or with him. I think Pat feels this way because of the suspicious activity his brother has been involved with. For example, telling no one to listen to the messages besides him. Also, he has randomly disappeared, leading my to think that they are about to go on the run. It could also possibly be that Pat is confused in the situation. He might not know why Coop is gone and why he wont come back. For example, he could be wondering what is going on and how quickly things are escalating.
